Autism Evaluation
Understanding how your child experiences, communicates, and connects with the world.
Autism is about much more than social communication alone. It encompasses differences in communication, social understanding, emotional regulation, sensory processing, flexibility, and daily living skills, as well as in how an individual experiences and responds to the world. Because these characteristics often overlap with ADHD, anxiety, language disorders, and other developmental conditions, a thoughtful evaluation is essential.
An autism evaluation considers all of these areas together to determine whether autism best explains an individual’s unique pattern of strengths, differences, and support needs. The goal is to develop a meaningful understanding of how the individual learns, communicates, and functions so recommendations are individualized, practical, and supportive.
What May Be Included in an Autism Evaluation
Every evaluation is individualized. The specific measures selected depend on the referral questions, age, developmental level, and concerns being addressed.
🗣️ Social Communication
Evaluates verbal and nonverbal communication, conversational skills, social reciprocity, understanding of social cues, and the ability to develop and maintain age-appropriate relationships.
👥 Social Awareness
Assesses social understanding, perspective-taking, recognition of social cues, and how an individual interprets and responds to social situations.
🌼 Self-Regulation & Self-Soothing Behaviors
Examines repetitive behaviors, restricted interests, self-soothing strategies, routines, and behavioral responses to stress, transitions, and sensory experiences.
🌿 Sensory Processing
Evaluates responses to sensory input, including sound, touch, movement, textures, lights, smells, and other environmental experiences that may affect daily functioning.
🧠 Intellectual Functioning
Measures reasoning, problem-solving, learning potential, and overall thinking abilities. Understanding cognitive strengths and weaknesses provides important context for interpreting developmental and adaptive functioning.
❤️ Emotion Regulation
Assesses the ability to recognize, express, and regulate emotions, cope with frustration, and adjust to changes in routines or expectations.
📚 Academic Achievement (when appropriate)
Brief assessment of reading, writing, and mathematics to evaluate how developmental differences may be affecting academic performance and identify whether additional evaluation of learning is recommended.
🌱 Adaptive Functioning
Measures practical everyday skills such as communication, independence, self-care, organization, and daily living abilities when appropriate for the referral questions.
